Bergy to the 'Pen & Os/Sox lineups

*Brad Bergesen is being skipped at least once in the rotation given Monday’s off day. Interim manager Juan Samuel wasn’t sure if this will be a long-term deal or not, but didn’t rule that out. The feeling is Bergesen needs to get his arm slot straightened out. Bergesen has had an up and down year, but do you really give up on the guy?

*Mike Gonzalez’s last bullpen session was “not good” Samuel said. He will take two days off and throw on Tuesday. The Orioles won’t come right out and say it, but mid-June is not looking likely. Keep in mind Gonzalez will need to go on a rehab assignment after he’s through with extended spring.

*As expected, Brian Roberts took another day off and rested today.

*Matt Wieters is struggling at the plate. Yes, all the Orioles are, but the switch-hitter catcher’s has looked particularly bad lately.  Obviously, Wieters is young and has a lot to work on given the demands of catching. Samuel said he will try to give Wieters more rest days in hopes that will rejuvenate him.

*Will Ohman will remain the team’s closer in the Juan Samuel Era. If you’re curious, David Hernandez will remain the back end of the bullpen guy. He was up warming in the blowout last night,  but that’s only because the Orioles had burned through so many arms.

Yankees/Orioles Lineups and tidbits

*Spoke with Mike Gonzalez on the phone yesterday. He’s pain free and expects to throw an inning Saturday either a simulated game or extended spring game. The timetable for his return is June 14, although it could be the series after the Os return from the West Coast.
*Jake Arrieta continues to make a push at Triple-A Norfolk. If you missed it, I wrote about him and Chris Tillman yesterday.
*Brian Roberts is progressing well at extended Spring Training and will play in a game on June 4.  The plan is for him to play five innings and get a few at-bats.
*Felix Pie will start to throw down in Sarasota. He has not participated in any baseball-related activities since being diagnosed with an upper back strain.

Orioles/Royals lineup and tidbits

*Brian Roberts will report to the team’s facility in Sarasota, Fla. on Wednesday and is expected to continue to progress in baseball-related activities until he can go on a rehab assignment.

*Mike Gonzalez threw to live hitters for the first time today, tossing live BP in Sarasota.

*Much has been made about Nolan Reimold playing first base yesterday, and Orioles manager Dave Trembley acknowledged that Reimold will play first pretty regularly while in Triple-A.  He admitted he’s not sure if Reimold -who is nine months removed from Achillies heel surgery – will ever have the same agility and mobility that he did before the injury.

*Koji to close? It’s a possibility Trembley wouldn’t rule out.

As always, more details to come on Orioles.com. But here are the lineups for today’s game as the forecast has some light rain, but the team is confident they’ll get the game in. (As I type this, they are taking the tarp off the field.)

Orioles starter Brad Bergesen faces Kansas City for the first time since he was struck by a Billy Butler liner to the shin last July. He will be opposed by Kyle Davies.

O's/Tribe finale and pregame tidbits galore

Lots of notes today in the Orioles series finale, starting with David Hernandez, who was scratched with a right shoulder injury and is being replaced with Mark Hendrickson.
*Hernandez said there are no plans for an MRI and classified himself as “day to day”. Manager Dave Trembley said the team is confident he will make his next scheduled turn on Friday, but acknowledged that how Hernandez comes out of his next side session will be a big factor in that decision.
*Brian Roberts took ground balls and hit off a tee prior to Sunday’s game and if all goes as expected, he will head to extended Spring Training on Tuesday.
*Mike Gonzalez came out of yesterday’s side session on the mound with no reported problems and is scheduled to throw one inning of live batting practice at the team’s facility in Sarasota, Fla. He will also throw an inning on Thursday with no scheduled plans beyond that.
*With last night’s decision to option Rhyne Hughes back to Triple-A Norfolk, Garrett Atkins will be the team’s everyday first baseman for the forseeable future.
*The move to recall Alberto Castillo in Hughes’ spot is one that replaces a lefty with a lefty. Given that Hendrickson is starting the O’s pen would be shorthanded, so Castillo gives the club some depth.
*Following his first blown save of the season in Saturday’s loss, Alfredo Simon will remain the team’s closer. But you would think his leash is far shorter now. “I can’t say I’m going to use him the next 10 times out [in a closing situation],” Trembley said.
*Finally, I asked Cesar Izturis if he ran on his own in the fifth inning of last night. He said he always has a green light but didn’t get a sign to steal. He was gunned out by Lou Marson in a play that later cost the O’s a run.

B-Rob, Gonzo updates and Tribe/Os lineups

*Brian Roberts played catch with infield coach Juan Samuel earlier this afternoon which got some of the reporters wondering- is that a baseball-related activity? Turns out today is his first full day doing that (if you read my blog yesterday you’d know I checked in with B-Rob yesterday and he had no real news.) So today’s sighting, and confirmation form manager Dave Trembley is a small step, but encouraging nonetheless.

“I am encouraged,” Trembley said. “[Roberts is] feeling better, but he’s got a ways to go yet.”

*Mike Gonzalez got up on the mound for the first time since going on the DL (left shoulder strain). He threw a side session in Sarasota. Prior to that, Gonzo was throwing on flat ground and gradually progressing to farther distances.

Red Sox/Os finale

*As I reported last night, there’s no timetable on Brian Roberts’ return to the lineup. He said that he has not discussed surgery as an option and declined to speculate on a target date. He did clarify it is his back, not his stomach.

*Mike Gonzalez started a throwing program Saturday. Those typically last three weeks and then he will need a rehab assignment. If no setbacks, he would theoretically be ready by the end of May.

*Brad Bergesen said he felt last night’s start was better than the previous three he made up here, saying he was more relaxed. At times he still got away from what he does best, but it’s good to see him make improvement. The Orioles need him.

*Kevin Youkilis was a late scratch for the Sox with a sore left groin.

B-Rob "better"

About the only positive piece of news manager Dave Trembley relayed
following Friday’s loss
was on the opposite side of the country.

Brian Roberts saw back specialist Dr. Lee Riley and he’s responding
well to his second epidural. Trembley was told that Roberts is a “little better”
and he will see Riley again on Monday.

Given that Felix Pie is now on the disabled list, any of hope of returning
Roberts to the lineup is a lift. Even if that hope is slight.

Trembley: Lineup changes

Given
that the Orioles have scored just 20 runs in their first seven games, the
lowest in the American League and the second lowest in baseball, it’s not a
stretch to say a lineup shakeup might be effective.

“Yeah,
I probably should do something,” manager Dave
Trembley
said following Monday’s fourth straight loss.  “You lose your leadoff hitter [in Brian Roberts]. That just isn’t the
greatest news in the world, when that happens. Then you’ve got probably eight
other guys trying to make up for his loss. Guys are human. Yeah, I may do
something, maybe just to show  a different look. Show a different look
that might get us started. You definitely have to consider something like that.

“But
[Felix] Pie does a very nice job in
the leadoff role tonight. We are just not getting hits when we need them and
our scoring opportunities have been limited.”

Pie
went 2-for-3 with a leadoff homer and was the only Orioles hitter to post a
multi-hit inning.

Markakis airs his frustrations

More about the Orioles offense from the usually reserved Nick Markakis.

“It’s not fun. It sucks. I think overall, our pitching is
doing a great job. Our offense needs to pick it up. I know for myself in the
three hole, I need to be more aggressive, get things going,” he said. “We just
all need to relax. It’s a long season. I know it’s not the way we wanted to
start, but we have to keep battling. Just go out there and things will start
going our way eventually.”

Manager Dave Trembley
alluded to guys pressing with Brian
Roberts
now on the disabled list, Markakis said he’s just trying to recognize
pitches and get a good swing.

“I’m started to hit the ball a little bit better than I have
been. I just need to calm down and relax,” he said. “It’s a long season. Eight
games, it’s not going to make or break your season. A lot of people struggle early
on.”

Would he welcome the lineup shuffling Trembley mentioned
post-game Monday night?

“Whatever he wants to do to get things going, I’m all for
it. You have to do what you got to do,” he said. “I know as hitters, we’re
trying our best to do what we have to do. I know all of us, we don’t really
care.”

Is he seeing the ball well?

“I’m seeing the ball great. I just think it’s a timing issue
right now. Some people when they lose their timing, it takes a while to get
back.  I think I’m one of the guys where
I need to get a good number of at-bats under my belt just to see the pitches.
It doesn’t help with the guys that they’re throwing at us, but we’re going to
see them all year and we’re going to battle all year.”

On the Orioles’ small crowd:

“We still go to go out there and play baseball. I could care
less if there was nobody in the stands. We just have to go out there and play
and not worry about that kind of stuff.”

Maddon on B-Rob

Brian Roberts’
absence goes beyond the expected shuffling of
Ty Wigginton
and
Julio
Lugo
at second base.  Monday’s decision to place
Roberts on the 15-day disabled list, with the possibility that he could be
shelved longer, also dramatically changes the complexion of the Orioles lineup.

“He sets
it up for that team,” Rays manager
Joe Maddon said of
Roberts prior to Monday’s Rays-Orioles series opener.  I’m sure it’s going
to make it more difficult for them, because he’s one of the legitimate leadoff
hitters. You have guys hitting leadoff hitters that maybe aren’t legitimate
leadoff hitters. He’s truly a solid No. 1 guy. So, that’s going to have an
impact on them.”

Orioles
manager
Dave
Trembley
admits there is no way of replacing Roberts’ productivity, but the
team will give it their best shot by likely using a mixture of Felix Pie, Adam
Jones and Cesar Izturis in the top spot.  Pie was Monday’s leadoff hitter
and Trembley said, “right now, he makes the most sense.”

The left
fielder got off to a great start in Monday’s game, hitting a solo shot in the
first inning for his first career leadoff home run.  The only problem with
Pie being the leadoff hitter is it usually means
Nolan Reimold is out of the
lineup. (Or
Luke Scott if they let Reimold DH.)

Trembley admitted Reimold’s isn’t a conventional leadoff man,
since he is more of an RBI guy. But the Orioles might have to use an
unconventional approach. Given their lack of timely hitting, (9-for-54 entering
Monday) it might be worth a shot.
