For those of you who don’t visit the Giants site, I bring you this Orioles-related note from associate reporter Cash Kruth…
SAN FRANCISCO – Aubrey Huff has experienced his share of losing during his 11-year Major League career.
The Giants outfielder/first baseman spent five-plus seasons in Tampa Bay, where the team finished in last place every year but one. He also spent two-plus seasons with Baltimore — with whom the Giants begin a three-game series against Monday night — and ended those seasons in fourth and fifth place.
Twice, thanks to midseason trades, Huff experienced the thrill of a playoff chase — in 2006 with Houston and last season with Detroit — but failed each time to make it into the postseason. Now with the Giants, who have the fifth-best record in the National League and are 1 1/2 games out of first place in the National League West, Huff is enjoying his first full season of being in the playoff hunt.
“My last couple years, you really start getting so down about the losing and I was thinking I’d rather retire than go through another year like that. It’s tough,” Huff said Sunday of his time in Baltimore. “To come here, with the pitching staff we have here, you have a great chance to win every day.”
Even with the Orioles (a Major League worst 17-46) coming to town, Huff knows — perhaps from too much experience — the Giants need to play sound baseball to keep up their current pace.
“They’re having a rough year, but you can’t take them lightly,” Huff said. “You never know what might happen.”
