Orioles @ Red Sox Game 1

Greetings from Fenway Park, where the Orioles will take on the Red Sox for the first of two games in today’s doubleheader.

Not a whole lot of news pre game, although Preston Guilmet is here as the O’s extra man and will be activated for Game 2. The Orioles will also get Manny Machado back so they will go from a 24-man roster to 26. Baltimore has gone 4-0 since Machado started his suspension and manager Buck Showalter said he’s gotten plenty of ribbing about it.

The Orioles will make another roster move prior to Sunday’s game in recalling right-hander Kevin Gausman from Triple-A Norfolk to start the series finale. With a doubleheader today, the Orioles wanted lefty T.J. McFarland to stay in the bullpen and Gausman will get that start.

The O’s are mapping out their rotation up to and after the All-Star Break and there’s a good chance that they option a starting pitcher prior to the Break to get an extra player and make sure of the 10-day rule with the break.

Bud Norris will throw a simulated game after Game 1, throwing to hitters at Fenway Park in hopes that he can make a start for the Orioles next week. Norris, who is dealing with a groin injury, already did some fielding work Thursday and they want to see how he does in a game situation next. He could potentially be a candidate to start on July 9, which would keep Miguel Gonzalez on regular rest. Gonzalez was originally slated to start yesterday’s game.

The organization remains optimistic Nolan Reimold, who was designated for assignment, will clear waivers. In that scenario, Reimold would be out righted to Triple-A Norfolk.

Dylan Bundy didn’t have a great debut for Frederick last night, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs, but it was to be expected in his road to recovery. Some in the organization figured he would struggle the first few times in the Carolina League since it’s a decent jump from short-season Aberdeen.
