Orioles @ Rangers lineups & pregame notes (updated)
Greetings from Globe Live Park, where the Orioles will end their road trip with three games against the Rangers.
*Nelson Cruz is back in the lineup and facing his former organization tonight, batting third and playing left field. Cruz, who got hit in the hand on Sunday and left the game, said he’s fine after getting a bunch of treatment during Monday’s off day.
As for what he hopes the fan reaction is when he steps to the plate, Cruz said: “Love. Hopefully. You always try to expect the best so hopefully I hear some cheers.”
Cruz, who declined the Rangers qualifying offer this winter to become a free agent, has flourished for the O’s and is leading the Majors in homers (20) and RBIs (52) entering Tuesday.
*Matt Wieters threw 30 times from varying distances today, working up past 90 feet as he continues to be encouraged with how his elbow is progressing. Wieters said he will stick with an every other day schedule at least for this week, and didn’t want to project anything beyond that.
“We are trying to get to a point where we can really see where we are at,” he said. “Each day I have thrown I have gotten more strength and able to do more throws before fatigue will set in.”
*Tommy Hunter, who is on the disabled list with a groin strain, threw a bullpen today with no issues and said he will throw again –possibly facing some hitters– on Thursday. Hunter would probably need one or two rehab games and could be back as early as June 9th.
*Dylan Bundy threw four-plus innings today and he will throw one more time in extended spring before joining the O’s short-season affiliate in Aberdeen. The IronBirds first game is June 13.
*The Orioles kept Johan Santana with yesterday’s news that he was added to the 40-man roster and manager Buck Showalter said the team could go to a six-man rotation when Santana gets ready to join the big league club. That could by mid-month.
*The Orioles have named Single-A Delmarva’s Hunter Harvey the organization’s minor league Pitcher of the Month for May, and Double-A Bowie first baseman Christian Walker the Player of the Month. Harvey, a right-hander, was the O’s first-round pick in last year’s Draft.
