Orioles vs. Indians Game 1- Hunter to DL

*The Orioles have placed right-hander Tommy Hunter on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a left groin strain. Hunter, who has been sidelined for as long as two months in the past with the same injury, first felt it pre game yesterday making some throws. Both he and the team are optimistic that they caught it early and that it will be a minimum DL stay.

The Orioles have recalled right-hander Preston Guilmetfrom Triple-A Norfolk to take his spot on the roster. Guilmet was eligible to come up within the typical 10-day window because it’s an injury situation. With lefty Wei-Yin Chen on the mound tonight and three lefties already in the pen, the O’s wanted another righty.

*Johan Santana will likely make one more extended spring start before he goes out on rehab assignment, according to manager Buck Showalter. Santana threw four innings in extended spring this morning, throwing 10 more pitches to get his pitch count up to 58 after that. His velocity, which has been in the mid-to-uppper 80s was reported as a tick higher than his last time out.

*Chris Davis’ wife, Jill, is scheduled to induce labor for the couple’s first child on Sunday. In that scenario, Davis would miss Sunday and Monday afternoon’s game in Milwaukee. Obviously things can change, but that’s the plan. Davis will go on the paternity list, which is a minimum one day and max of three, and the O’s will be allowed to add another player during that time. They’d like an extra bat –Steve Lombardozzi, anyone?- but it will also depend on what their pitching situation is like at the time. Jemile Weeks is also an option.

*Congratulations to Orioles EVP Dan Duquette and his wife, Amy, who welcomed a baby boy named Colt early this morning.

*With Hunter going to the DL, the O’s were able to keep Brad Brach up here. Brach, who was a candidate to be optioned if need be, threw four scoreless innings and was a bright spot in Wednesday’s game. He said today he felt better than he anticipated and hasn’t gone four innings in a game since college. Showalter said with the way Brach throws, the O’s think he could be available to them as soon as Friday if needed.
