Gausman to make season debut Wednesday

Top pitching prospect Kevin Gausman will make his season debut for the Orioles, starting opposite Tigers ace Justin Verlander in Wednesday’s series finale.

The start was originally for lefty Wei-Yin Chen, but with the Tigers right-handed hitting lineup, the Orioles opted to make a move and listed the starter yesterday as TBA. They also have Thursday’s series opener in Kansas City as TBA with Chen and righty Miguel Gonzalez both options for that.

Gausman had been on the Minor League disabled list with pneumonia, but the right-hander returned to the mound on Saturday with no issues. He has faced the Tigers before, despite a limited resume in the Majors, facing Detroit June 2, 2013 and allowing one run and five hits in six innings at Camden Yards.

Gausman’s last outing with the Orioles came in relief on Sept. 28, 2013, when he tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts as the youngster seemed to find his footing in the ‘pen after a rocky time as a starter in 2013. His last start for the O’s came on June 13 against the Red Sox, and he surrounded two runs and six hits with five walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Britt, i heard Buck’s comments today on the pitching and am not sure where he’s going with this promotion. Are you of the opinion that he’s going to have a bake off for the fifth man in the rotation? Maybe concerned that Gonzo is barely clearing 5 innings per start? Thanks. Brian

He doesn’t appear to be one-and-done if he pitches well. Gonzalez will return to start, they’ve got a lot of balls up in the air right now. But he also gives them some length in the ‘pen for now. -Britt
