Orioles vs. Tigers Game 1 lineups & pregame notes

Greetings from Camden Yards, where the Orioles will take in the Tigers for the first of a three game series. The O’s have won their last two series, against the Rays and Astros, coming in. For Detroit, first-place in the American League Central, this is the start of a three-game road trip.

*The Orioles have recalled right-hander Preston Guilmet, who takes the roster spot of T.J. McFarland, for tonight’s game. Guilmet will help the O’s against a right-handed heavy Tigers lineup and he last pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday. He has appeared in 12 games total, allowing nine earned runs –six of which came in one outing– on 11 hits and four walks with 17 strikeouts over 14 1/3 innings.

*With yesterday’s big news that Matt Wieters is headed to the disabled list, it’s been no secret that the O’s are doing their due diligence in looking for external options. They have also been impressed so far with how backup Steve Clevenger has fared, something both manager Buck Showalter and EVP Dan Duquette mentioned today.

“It’s unreasonable to expect us to fill Matt Wieters’ shoes and find a Gold Glove caliber catcher in-season,” Duquette said. “But these guys [in Cleveger and Caleb Joseph] have been good for us so far. They’ve done a nice job.”

Clevenger figures to get the bulk of the playing time for now and Baltimore will continue to monitor the trade market and waivers while Wieters rests, with lefty reliever Troy Patton a name that has surfaced frequently in trade talks. There is no timetable on Wieters’ return.

*The O’s starting pitchers took batting practice today in preparation for next week’s two-game series in Pittsburgh. The only reliever who took a few swings was lefty Zach Britton, according to Showalter, since he could potentially pitch multiple innings.
