Orioles @ Rays lineups & pregame notes (updated)

Greetings from Tropicana Field, where the Orioles got good news today on catcher Matt Wieters’ right elbow. Wieters was examined by Dr. James Andrews this morning and the Gold Glover is not a candidate for surgery. He is expected back with the team around 5:30 p.m. ET and is listed tonight on the bench. The expectation is he will play tomorrow and catch “in the near future” according to manager Buck Showalter.

*To help add catching depth –given that Wieters will likely have to rest his elbow from throwing– the O’s purchased the contract of Caleb Joseph. Joseph, 28, is making his first career Major League start tonight. The O’s had an extra spot on their 40-man roster and they optioned Jemile Weeks back to Triple-A Norfolk to clear room on the 25-man roster.

Joseph found out in a comical way as he was being chewed out by manager Ron Johnson after talking to a player on the opposing team during batting practice on Tuesday.

“R.J. is a character, so I’ve never seen like a really, really, really serious side to him, so I was scared to death,” Joseph said. “I said, ‘Man, I’m really sorry. I’ll never talk to anybody on their team every again. I won’t even talk to you if you don’t want me to.’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, we’re going to scratch you. We’re also scratching you because you’re going  to Florida tomorrow.’ I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I lost it at that point. I was like, ‘That is not how I dreamed about it.’ But it was great. It was a good moment.”

*Chris Davis was out again before the game doing some running and throwing as he continues to progress from a left oblique strain.

*Francisco Peguero (wrist) will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. The O’s have 20 days to add him after that.

*Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) threw a bullpen session today and the pitching prospect will throw live batting practice on Saturday.

Am I right that the O’s only have 1 left-handed batter tonite??

Yes, the Rays are starting a lefty. So Buck stacked it with righties.
