Wieters to see Dr. Andrews
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters– who was not behind the plate for Tuesday’s game– will see Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday about nagging right elbow soreness, MLB.com has confirmed.
Wieters missed a game in Toronto two weeks ago with what he described as right forearm soreness, but was back in the lineup the following day. He said he first felt that injury throwing to second base during one of the team’s cold night games in Boston last month.
Wieters was the Orioles’ designated hitter on Tuesday, with backup Steve Clevenger catching. Any serious injury to the Gold Glover would be a serious hit to the O’s with Wieters batting .337 with five homers and 18 RBIs, second only to Nelson Cruz.
Among AL catchers entering Tuesday, Wieters lead in batting average (.337), homers and slugging percentage (.570).
A visit to Andrews is never good and the Orioles scratched Triple-A Norfolk’s Caleb Joseph from the Tides starting lineup on Tuesday night, likely an insurance move in the event that Wieters goes on the disabled list.
