Orioles @ Rays lineups & pregame notes (updated, Brach optioned)

Greetings from Tropicana Field, where the news of the day was first baseman Chris Davis, who took 25 swings and did 30 throws out of the field. Both were the first time since he suffered a left oblique strain. Davis, who simulated fielding, will be out and moving around for the team’s batting practice. He could be fielding in the next few days.

Davis is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 11, and while he’s ahead of schedule it’s still a longshot he’d be ready by then. Although manager Buck Showalter said don’t hold him to that line of thinking, Davis would need 2-3 rehab games before he’s ready. He will travel north with the team after this road trip with his wife, Jill, very pregnant and the team’s training staff able to work with him in Baltimore.

*T.J. McFarland has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, with right-hander Brad Brach optioned to clear a roster spot. The O’s are opening a stretch of 26 games in 27 games tonight and McFarland gives them some length, if necessary.

*Kevin Gausman, who is on the Minor League disabled list with pneumonia, will start on Saturday. Gausman threw a side today and is feeling much better and he will throw one more before Saturday.

*Johan Santana, who threw two innings in an extended spring game yesterday, had a fastball that averaged 88mph and Showalter –who was on hand to watch– said that’s similar to what he was throwing for his big league no-hitter. Santana’s change-up was around 76 mph.

*Dylan Bundy threw an impressive bullpen yesterday and is nearing playing in games. Nolan Reimold had five at-bats in extended spring today, while Francisco Peguero had four.
