Notes on McFarland, Santana, Davis and Cruz
*The Orioles appear poised to make a roster move, with lefty T.J. McFarland scratched from his start in Triple-A Norfolk and headed to meet the team in St. Petersburg. McFarland will “probably” be activated, per a source for Tuesday’s series opener against the Rays.
Asked on Sunday if the off day was enough to help his oft-used bullpen, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said initially it was. But with the O’s entering a stretch of 13 consecutive games it’s clear their thinking has changed.
*There were encouraging reports on Johan Santana’s extended spring game today as his velocity continues to trend upward and he was clocked in the 88-89 mph range with his fastball. Santana threw two innings against the Twins extended spring club and is on a five-man rotation, meaning he will pitch again in extended on Saturday.
*I’ve been asked a few times about the status of Chris Davis, who continues to be ahead of schedule. I spoke with Davis yesterday about his rehab which you can read here.
*Nelson Cruz is enjoying a fresh start with the Orioles after the worst year of his pro career, tainted by a 50-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs. The O’s signed Cruz late after he turned down a much-higher qualifying offer and the slugger –who has a team-leading nine homers– talked about his regrets, the offseason and why Baltimore feels like family in today’s feature up here.
