Orioles @ Blue Jays Game 1 (Machado to Frederick on Friday)

Greetings from Toronto, where the Orioles will open up a three-game series against the Blue Jays tonight.

*Manny Machado will begin his highly-anticipated rehab assignment on Friday for Class-A Advanced Frederick and the team will wait two or three days and see where he is after that. He will go to either Double-A Bowie or Triple-A Norfolk from there. Machado served at designated hitter as scheduled today in extended spring and will play seven innings at third base on Wednesday. He is scheduled to travel back to Frederick on Thursday and he could return early next month.

*Dylan Bundy, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, will take a big step forward in his next bullpen and throw breaking balls. Bundy has been just limited to change ups and fastballs as he continues to get his elbow back strong.

*Matt Wieters is out of the lineup tonight as he’s dealing with some right forearm soreness that occurred when on a throw to second base during Sunday night’s game. Wieters had a scheduled day off on Monday and said he just wants to make sure the issue isn’t something that’s a nagging thing. Wieters has never had anything like this, but wasn’t too worried about his forearm. He said he is available off the bench as needed.

*J.J. Hardy’s right hamstring is feeling “much, much better” today and he’s also available if needed. Hardy, who spent last night icing at the team hotel, ran and took some ground balls before batting practice and said he’s in a much better mood regarding his hamstring injury than he was on Monday.

Hardy said he could be back in the starting lineup on Wednesday depending on how he progresses.

*The Orioles officially announced their roster move in adding lefty T.J. McFarland to the bullpen, designating Steve Pearce for assignment to clear a spot.

Pearce, who was surrounded by teammates and very well-liked in the clubhouse, will probably be claimed by another team on waivers but he said today he really, really enjoy his time with the Orioles. Pearce was fine with his role as a bench guy and liked the organization, with manager Buck Showalter always singling Pearce out this spring for his makeup.

*Troy Patton will pitch the end of an inning tonight for Norfolk and then start a clean inning as the lefty works his way back. Patton is slated to come off the restricted list on April 30.
