Orioles @ Red Sox Game 4- Patriots Day

Greetings from Fenway Park, where the Orioles will take on the Red Sox in the series finale. It’s a rough 11 a.m. start after last night’s game on ESPN, but it’s the tradition of Patriots Day.

*Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy was not in Monday morning’s lineup after exiting Sunday night’s game with a right hamstring strain suffered running the bases in the fifth inning.

“It’s way too early to tell,” manager Buck Showalter said on Hardy’s condition. “Day-to-day. About what you’d expect. Everybody’s sore.

“I’m not going to broadcast whether he’s available or not today. Hopefully we got it before it turned into something that would be a problem. We’ll see.”

*David Lough confirmed this morning he was trying to hit the cut off man at third base on the last play of the game, with Jonathan Schoop moving out of the way and Lough’s throw skipping wide at home. Dustin Pedroia went back to tag up and the Red Sox walked off to a win in an ugly game for the O’s.

Showalter met with the umpires after the game to check on if all the runners went back to tag, but it was a moot point.

“Last play of the game. They didn’t have a real good answer when I was asking them about tagging up and did they he touch the next base. It’s not reviewable,” Showalter said.

“The same reason why you can’t review, did they step out of the 45 foot lane down the first base line. Why if a second baseman is behind that umpire, you can’t review that on a trap play.”

“When you looking at them, talking to you, you understand there’s not a lot of conviction and rightfully so. You can tell this [new replay system] is putting them on their heels a little bit.”

*There’s been a lot of talk about the transfer play last night as well, and Showalter reiterated that trying to challenge that rule is a waste of time. The new interoperation, which has created enough outrage around baseball that it’s expected to change, has not been overruled once this season and it was made clear this spring that it was going to be enforced as it was last night on shortstop Ryan Flaherty.
