Indians DFA Reynolds

The Indians designated former Oriole Mark Reynolds for assignment, a baseball source told Thursday morning. Reynolds hit .215/.307/.373 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs in 99 games for the Indians, striking out 123 times in 384 plate appearances. The team now has 10 days to trade, release or have Reynolds clears waivers.

Signed to a one-year deal this winter, Reynolds had originally wanted to return to Baltimore and it’s unclear immediately how much interest his former club –which has struggled in the designated hitter spot– has in a reunion. Reynolds hit .221/.328/.458 in two seasons with the O’s and, while his bat is capable of carrying a team offensively, he’s also strikeout-prone and had a prolonged slump the first half of last season.

The Orioles declined Reynolds’ $11 million option this winter and later non-tendered him, making him a free agent. Cleveland offered him a one-year, $6-million deal with incentives in December. The Orioles DH spot is .210/.269/.389 with 16 homers and 46 RBIs and the club has employed a rotating cast without a true DH.

Always streaky, Reynolds followed a red-hot April by hitting .218 in May, .187 in June, and .098 in July. His playing time had diminished considerably and he’s 3-for-9 in August.

Let’s hope the Orioles have zero interest. Since May 10 (arbitrary end-point alert!), Reynolds is hitting .178/.277/.240. That’s 4 home runs in 256 plate appearances. Also, he is a terrible defender.

He would be a good bat and maybe being home can motivate him to hit better. And he would not play in the field I would think just DH.

Bring him back, this is the time of year his bat heats up and we could definitely use some production out of the DH. At the same time an occasional start at 1st when Davis needs some rest, he said I himself he enjoys DHing occasionally a few games back. Makes sense. We have plenty of OF depth, but no corner infield depth.

Our DH is not hitting anyway. I think Reynolds is still a better hitter than Pearce. If birds are not chasing Michael Morse or Micheal Young, then bring him back then. Yankees might have some interests in Reynolds too.

Why not bring him back in the Dh role…do we honestly have anyone better

Didn’t Reynolds have an issue with keeping “in” the game as a DH, which is why Davis was DH a lot last year? I’d love to see the Sheriff return, but I don’t think we have a role for him currently besides DH and backup 1B, unless we send Urrutia down until September.

Urrutia is looking like a younger, faster version of singles machine Vladimir Guerrero, with his one non-single since moving up (although his OBP is better than Vlad’s, worse than Reynolds). Not exactly making a case to be the DH…

I mis-typed. Urrutia’s OBP is worse than the others. Urrutia is .273 OBP, Reynolds .307, Vlad has a .317 in 2011. Reynolds looks to be at the plate very similar to last year.overall, and his splits are pretty much the same against LHP and RHP.

Yes, he did have an issue with that, but he could spell Davis at 1B occasionally and Davis has been good in the DH spot.

I like him as a DH option. Also a good presence in the dugout.

He carries around the same numbers as the DH combinations we have now, but his bat has been known to heat up in August and September. Knowing that, his presence would be more of a psychological boost to the club than merely a numbers game, and team chemistry will count for a lot during these last months.

Bring the sheriff back, he’s one of my favorites, he’s been slumping but it won’t last forever. Reynolds can turn it on to end the season and at the very least strengthens our bench, he belongs In Baltimore, please bring him back O’s.

At the right price he would be great!! Good glove at 1st and can hit homers.

Sure do, and pearce strikes out less, face it, another team should do us a favor and grab him when he clears waivers
