Orioles vs. Yankees lineups and pregame notes

The Orioles designated infielder Travis Ishikawa for assignment prior to Saturday’s game, with right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take his roster spot and add length in the bullpen.  The team now has 10 days to trade, release and see if he clears waivers, although Ishikawa said he could become a free agent if he clears.

The 29-year-old Ishikawa was added to the roster on June 18, avoiding an opt-out in his clause that would have allowed him to become a free agent. Ishikawa started at first base that evening and went 2-for-18 in six games, often spelling first baseman Chris Davis. Ishikawa

Ishikawa who signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles this winter, had an impressive season at Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .316/.413/.525 with seven homers and 31 RBIs. He has reached base safely in 32 straight games and was named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Month in May after hitting .413 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in the month.

Jurrjens will give the Orioles a long man behind lefty starter Zach Britton. With rookies T.J. McFarland and Kevin Gausman both going multiple innings on Friday night, the Orioles need coverage in the event of a short start for any reason. With second baseman Brian Roberts in Baltimore and scheduled to be activated from the disabled list on Sunday, Jurrjens’ stay could be very short.

Wei-Yin Chen is making his first –and perhaps only– rehab start tonight for Double-A Bowie and there will be more on that following his outing on Orioles.com. Chen could pitch for the Orioles on Thursday or Friday if he’s deemed ready. Nolan Reimold is also playing for the Baysox and the hope is he travels with the team to Chicago on Monday.

What is status of Steve Johnson??

He’s throwing off flat ground.

Hi Britt! With Ishikawa being designated, do you think a trade is imminent? It’s hard to believe they thought he’d be up for the rest of the year and I’m thinking they wanted to display him for a few days at the ML level. Are you hearing anything you can share? Thanks, and keep up the good reporting!

I should read more carefully…just reread that they had to bring him up or lose him to free agency…sorry. Guess I’m a little anxious for a trade.🙂
