Orioles vs. Indians lineups and pregame notes
Greetings from Camden Yards, where there are threats of storms (again) tonight but right now the tarp is off the field.
Freddy Garcia opted out of his contract with the Orioles and has signed a new Minor League deal. Garcia will report to Triple-A Norfolk and he’s now off the 40-man roster which gives the Orioles a spot for when they activate second baseman Brian Roberts.
Roberts is playing for Triple- A Norfolk on rehab assignment again today and could be activated as early as tomorrow. Manager Buck Showalter said today that the hope is the team has Roberts for this weekend’s set against the Yankees.
Speaking of this weekend, Showalter still has not announced Friday’s starter officially. But it’s expected to be Kevin Gausman. The other candidate is lefty T.J. McFarland, but it’d be a surprise if they didn’t go with Gausman at this point.
*Nolan Reimold had his rehab extended and he could be activated when the Orioles leave for their roadtrip, which starts Tuesday in Chicago.
*Henry Urrutia has been promoted to Triple-A Norfolk from Double-A. He was one of six players on Bowie’s team named to the Eastern League All-Star roster. Also honored: Catcher Caleb Joseph, shortstop Niuman Romero, third baseman Ty Kelly and right-handed pitcher Mike Wright. Left-handed pitcher Jason Gurka was also selected for the game, but will not participate due to injury.
*Orioles Gulf Coast League manager Orlando Gomez earned his 1,000th career win Thursday when his club defeated the Gulf Coast League Twins 7-4.
Gomez has been in professional baseball for 49 years and has managed for 18 years. He’s managed at four levels of the Baltimore minor league system and served as batting practice pitcher for the major league club for two seasons.
“On behalf of the Orioles, I congratulate Orlando Gomez on this milestone achievement in his coaching career,” said Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said in a press release. “We proudly recognize his lifelong dedication and hard work to mentor young ballplayers by teaching them the skills needed to have successful careers in professional baseball.”
