Orioles invite trio to big league camp

The Orioles announced the signing of a trio of players to Minor League contracts on Wednesday afternoon in first baseman Travis Ishikawa and left-handed pitchers Daniel  and Zach Braddock.

All three have been invited to Major League Spring Training, bringing Baltimore’s total to 11 non-roster players who will be in big league camp in Sarasota, Fla.

The 29-year-old Ishikawa hit .257/.329/.428 in 94 games with Milwaukee in 2012, making 27 starts at first base. Prior to that, he spent parts of four seasons with San Francisco, posting a .265/.327/.400 line with 15 home runs and 80 RBIs in 281 games.  Against right-handed pitching, Ishikawa is a career .266/.333/.416 with 18 home runs in 741 plate appearances.

Schlereth made six appearances with Detroit last season, allowing eight earned runs in seven innings pitched for a 10.29 ERA before being non-tendered in November. The 26-year-old posted a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings pitched in 11 Minor League games. A former first-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in ’08, Schlereth has held left-handed hitters to a .213/.320/.368 line in 184 plate appearances.

Braddock was released by Milwaukee in May and did not pitch last season because of undisclosed personal issues. The 25-year-old pitched to a 7.27 ERA in 25 games in 2011, spending time on the disabled list to get treatment for a sleep disorder and missing most of the second half.  Braddock went 1-3 with a 4.41 ERA, allowing 25 earned runs over 51 innings pitched, in parts of two seasons for the Brewers. He has held left-handed hitters to a .185/.313/.296 line and 28 strikeouts in 99 plate appearances.

What fantastic signings!! Apparently easier to sign these non-entities than anyone who can hit or play a decent 2nd base.

Are any of our Minor leaguers being invited to camp? How does that work?

Everyone on the 40-man roster is invited, so yes.

Do non 40-Man Roster minor leaguers ever get invited? If so, will any be invited? Are there any who are close to being invited or that you’d like to see invited?
Will the World Games affect the camp invitees?

BG – When I read articles about MLB, I see the biweekly magazine Baseball America quoted all the time. Why is that? Isn’t it just a group of 11 journalists in North Carolina who give their personal opinions? Why is this publication so quoted?

All I wanted for Christmas was for the O’s to make a move! :)

You can’t call these “bench -warmers” a move! We needed Mark Reynolds or someone who can hit 40 HR’s

You’re preaching to the choir Doug.
I’ll miss Reynolds for his dugout charisma, the D he brought to the 2nd half O’s and the week he tore up the Yanks one week. The rest of his plate appearances, Not so much and his bad swinging seemed to infect Adam Jones.
So I’ll rephrase my Holiday Wish. Can the O’s find a way to patch that Big old hole Adam developed in his swing and help him become the Total Package we know he can be ( oh yeah and get rid of the gum too).
Now for some homemade pumpkin egg nog.
Cheers

Gregg, you’re right-we should not forget his defensive capabilities at 1st base nor his high “k” rate which did improve a little last year. Over the winter the team has regressed not improved as promised by Angelos after our short playoff run.

Well guys we know Reynolds is capable of 40 homers in a year but the big thing is the runs he saved the O’s @ 1B. All i wanted for the holiday season is a bat as they said they were going to make priority one and then sign Mclouth and say that was top priority. Lease get us a big bat we need it to keep up with the improvements others made in our division

And Doug ur rite we have regressed by losing a very important defensive part as well as a big bat. I would bet the farm Reynolds pounds 35 this year but just get us a stick as they said they would and I really believe it will put us rite back in the big picture. As they r sayin in KC the time is now with our young talented core group!!!

BG, do the O’s have any interest in Geocarlo Stanton? He looks like he could be huge and we probably have prospects and 40 man roster players they would like and we could trade for a bat like his. What do you think or hear?

John, you are assuming the O’s. G.M. Is willing to spend any $ which based on his recent history he is afraid to do!! Must be getting paid for lowering payroll not on winning! I’ve been a fan since 1954 and have never had the negative vibes I feel now.

Fans need to calm down and breath. To all who want the O’s to sign a big name I say , we already have the big names. 5 Gold Glove winners, at least 4 AllStars, & 2 of the best prospects in the game. Not to mention Pete is going to have to pay some guys at the end of the 2013 season, most notably Matt Wieters.

Believe Osfan has consummed too much orange Koolaide. Stop worrying about payroll as ,unfortunately, our G.M.is currently doing that to the detriment of the team.

Hey! here’s a thought… might the O’s consider trading for a bat in Jason Kubel (DH / Outfielder / convert to 1st base) or perhaps signing “FA” Delmon Young??
