Orioles vs. A’s

Greetings from Oakland, where the Orioles will try to even the series against the A’s after last night’s 3-2 loss. In case you missed it, I wrote about Orioles manager Buck Showalter and how he’s had a heavy hand in turning things around in Baltimore. You can read that here.

Wilson Betemit will fly to Sarasota tomorrow and is likely done for the season after re-aggravating his right wrist during pregame batting practice yesterday. More on that here.

*As my colleague, John Schlegel writes, no one should be surprised the A’s and O’s are here right now and deserve to be taken seriously as legit contenders. You can read that piece here.

*Left-hander Randy Wolf is starting for the Orioles on Sunday, which will make his first start since signing with Baltimore. Wolf’s last start was August 19– while with the Brewers– and he has made three relief appearances with the Orioles, throwing six 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks.

Wolf has made two career starts against the Oakland A’s, going 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA over 13 innings. He allowed four earned runs on nine hits and nine walks combined over those two games. The A’s lineup has struggled more against left-handed starters and the Orioles also figure to have right-hander Steve Johnson in long relief if needed behind Wolf.

Signed as a free agent after being released by Milwaukee, Wolf is a career 129-117 with a 4.18 ERA in 366 career starts.

*Jim Thome will take some swings in an instructional league game on Wednesday, with reliever Troy Patton scheduled to start tomorrow’s instrux game.
