Hammel exits with right knee injury

Orioles starter Jason Hammel exited Tuesday’s start in the fourth inning with a right knee injury suffered on a 1-0 pitch to Rays outfielder Matt Joyce.

On that pitch, Hammel came up and initially looked as if landed awkwardly on his left leg and after head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck  Showalter came out to the mound the 30-year-old Hammel walked off without help. Making his second start back since hitting the disabled list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, Hammel has been the Orioles best pitcher when healthy and losing him for any prolonged period of time would be a serious blow for Baltimore.

It’s unknown how serious the injury is to Hammel but he missed nearly two months following right knee surgery, a procedure which involved removing some of the loose cartilage that was causing him discomfort.  On Tuesday, Hammel lasted 3 2/3 innings allowing only a solo homer to Ryan Roberts before rookie Steve Johnson took over with a 3-1 lead.

Acquired in an offseason trade with the Colorado Rockies, Hammel entered Tuesday’s game 8-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 19 starts and was a Final Vote All-Star candidate earlier this season.

We’ve got to be happy about the bullpen and how they have responded all year in situations like this. They played some great shutdown ball last night. I hope Hammel is ok. It would be upsetting to see him out of the rotation since he has been stalwart since he has been in.

If Hamel is out for season and no starter with experience is out on the market, would it be in the O’s interest to look at Gregg as maybe that void to fill as well as mentor for some of the pitchers since he has had a positive influence on Perdro Strop if not others?

I don’t see that happening. If Hammel is out, Arrieta could fill his spot.
