Orioles @ Rays lineups and pregame notes

*The Orioles made a roster move today, selecting the contract of Nate McLouth and designating Endy Chavez for assignment to clear a spot on the 25-man and 40-man roster. The organization is trying to work out a trade for Chavez, who would have to consent to a Minor League assignment if he clears waivers given his service time. It’s highly unlikely he would consent to that.

McLouth had an out in his contract for earlier in the season, but agreed to extend it and the Orioles informed him of their decision to add him to the big league roster yesterday afternoon.

McLouth had leadoff experience and manager Buck Showalter said he’s a potential candidate if he wants to drop down Nick Markakis, who has been red-hot in his first career stint atop the order.

*Jason Hammel is about a week-and-a-half from throwing off a mound, according to Showalter. Hammel has been throwing off flat ground at home in Rhode Island.  It’s a little ahead of schedule for Hammel, who had right knee surgery and is hoping to be back in early September, will head to the team’s spring home in Sarasota, Fla. once he’s ready to go off a mound.

“He’s going to take that up to 120 [feet],” Showalter said of Hammel’s schedule. “When all that subsides and clears up, we’ll get him on a mound.

*Nick Johnson (right wrist injury) is at home, not in extended spring, while Stu Pomeranz threw off flat ground today. The Orioles won’t come right out and say it, but Johnson  –who is on the the 60-day DL — is probably done for the season.

*Brian Roberts’ hip surgery, which was Thursday, went as planned. Doctors found what they were expecting and the timetable for his recovery remains 4-6 months.
