Orioles @ Angels lineups and pregame notes (updated)

*An MRA taken on Brian Roberts’ right hip yesterday showed a torn labrum and Roberts will seek a second opinion with a hip specialist, according to manager Buck Showalter. There are several options Roberts can explore at this point, including surgery.

*Don Werner is here today and will serve as bullpen coach the rest of the series, as Bill Castro flew home to the Dominican Republic to deal with a death in the family.

*Nick Markakis (right wrist) had a good day today and will start playing games for Double-A Bowie tomorrow as expected.

*The Orioles are  not expected to make a corresponding roster move today for Jake Arrieta –who was optioned after last night’s game– and it looks as if they will wait until Saturday to recall infielder/outfielder Steve Tolleson. With Chris Davis out of the lineup for the second straight game –with a strained right trapezius muscle — and Mark Reynolds taking a pitch off his left hand last night, Tolleson could help add some depth to the corner infield and outfield spots.

The team’s bullpen is in pretty good shape right now, despite Arrieta’s 3 2/3 innings, but that can always change depending on what happens tonight. Either way, the Orioles will go with 24 players tonight and are expected to add Tolleson before Saturday’s game.

Reynolds said he did not get an X-ray on his left hand, but he does have a sizable bruise, and is still in the lineup today.

As for Davis, he said he could have played today, but with tough lefty C.J. Wilson on the mound it was an easy move for manager Buck Showalter to give Davis another day. Davis woke up yesterday with some stiffness in his neck and after trying to throw in pregame batting practice, he alerted the team’s trainers and was taken out of the lineup. The injury is believed to have stemmed from the sliding catch he made in right field during Wednesday’s game in Seattle.

“My range of motion is back,” said Davis, who was in good spirits on Friday afternoon. “It’s still painful, but as long as I can turn my head it’s the biggest thing. That’s obviously the way I look to hit. So I’m going to take BP today and I should be able to play tomorrow.”

*Miguel Gonzalez is making his first Major League start tonight for the Orioles and you can read a little more on that here.

*Orioles closer Jim Johnson -who is headed to his first All-Star Game– talks about his favorite All-Star game memory as a fan here. Catcher Matt Wieters, who is a two-time All-Star does the same.
