Orioles @ Rays lineups and pregame notes

*The Orioles officially placed Nick Markakis on the disabled list, purchased the contract of infielder/outfielder Bill Hall and placed Brian Roberts on the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot. Markakis spoke about his recovery earlier this afternoon (see the previous blog post) and he remains optimistic he can return sooner rather than later because he only had the part of the hamate bone that broke off removed, instead of the whole thing.

It’s important to note with Roberts that he was placed on the disabled list retroactive to the end of March so this does NOT change his timetable at all. Roberts has returned to Double-A Bowie to continue his progression, and he’s playing second base and leading off for the Baysox tonight. Manny Machado is playing third base with Jonathan Schoop at shortstop, a move that keeps Schoop –who is typically a second baseman — active with Roberts playing deeper into games. The Orioles also wanted to get Machado, who is seen as the organization’s shortstop of the future, some time at third base.

*The club is leaning toward giving Zach Britton at least one more rehab start, given that the Orioles don’t need a fifth starter until June 9 and can use the extra player right now instead. Britton, who made his second rehab start for Bowie last night, is slated to pitch Tuesday at Norfolk and he will continue his rehab assignment because activating and optioning him to Triple-A would make him unavailable to be recalled for at least 10 days.

It’s important to note that the plan with Britton, while largely a function of the team’s off days, is also dependent on the performance and health of the team’s current four starters. Things could change, but right now it looks as if the 24-year-old Britton get at least one more rehab start.

*Nolan Reimold is feeling better at extended spring and while he’s still not participating in baseball activities the Orioles are encouraged that he can perhaps avoid a third epidural injection.  Most of Reimold’s pain has gone away and he’s just dealing with a few lingering troublesome spots, according to Showalter.
