Markakis to DL, Hall to have contract purchased

Bill Hall is in Tampa, again announcing his arrival on Twitter, and the Orioles are expected to purchase his contract (again) in the place of right fielder Nick Markakis prior to tonight’s series opener against the Rays. Hall will need to be re-added to the 40-man roster, and the decision to recall the versatile Hall over a true outfielder should give manager Buck Showalter some flexibility on the bench.

Endy Chavez and Adam Jones are the team’s two outfielders with Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty, Wilson Betemit and Hall all capable of rotating in as well. Hall, who was signed to a Minor League deal earlier this season, had his contract purchased the first time from Triple-A Norfolk on May 12 and he was the odd man out in a roster crunch May 25. Hall cleared waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk the following day.

At the risk of sounding like a “Kevin Gregg” basher, there is the perfect spot on the 40 man roster for Bill Hall. Orioles need to “bite the bullet” and shed him – now.
