Antonelli claimed by Yankees
The Yankees announced Thursday that they have claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Orioles, who designated him for assignment last week to make room for Xavier Avery on the 40-man roster. Antonelli, who was one of executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette’s first signings, was in Major League camp but lost out on the utility role to Rule-5 pick Ryan Flaherty. Steven Tolleson was called up by the club last week, another sign that Antonelli’s stock was dropping in the organization.
Antonelli was hitting .204/.357/.280 in 29 games at Triple-A Norfolk when he was designated.
