Orioles vs. Rays lineups and pregame notes
(UPDATE: The Orioles announced that reliever Matt Lindstrom was sent to the 15-day disabled list to make room for Eveland on the 25-man roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Zelous Wheeler was designated for assignment. Lindstrom did not allow an earned run in his first 12 appearances but was shelled for three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in one inning Thursday against Texas.)
*The O’s will need to make a roster move in order to make room for Friday night starter Dana Eveland on the active roster, but manager Buck Showalter wasn’t ready to announce what it was just three hours before first pitch. Showalter said he has about three options he’s considering, but that things are still up in the air until he hears from team orthopedist Dr. Wilkins. A decision is expected around 5:30 p.m. ET. He said there was a slim possibility an active player could be moved to the disabled list, which would seem to indicate Jason Hammel and his sore right knee. Hammel said he threw Wednesday and had seen a significant decrease in swelling and fluid in the knee during the past few days. Hammel added that the problem first started to emerge after his April 25 start against Toronto, but that giving him a few extra days rest this week should keep this from being a problem he has to worry about all season. If Hammel can avoid the DL, the O’s would likely consider sending Tommy Hunter back down to Triple-A Norfolk.
*Nolan Reimold received an epidural Friday and spent the day recovering at home. Reimold is currently on the 15-day disabled list to treat a bulging disc in his cervical spine. The O’s had hoped to give Reimold the epidural earlier this week, but were forced to wait as he recovered from an infection. It was previously projected that he could begin a rehab assignment Monday or Tuesday of next week, but Showalter said Friday that the timetable would likely have to be moved back. Showalter also mentioned Sarasota, Fla., the site of O’s extended spring training, as a possible destination for Reimold.
*Endy Chavez could also be headed to Sarasota, although he will remain in Baltimore for the duration of the current homestand, which concludes Tuesday. Chavez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday to give him time to rest a sore oblique muscle.
*Tsuyoshi Wada underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday. Showalter had not yet heard Dr. Lewis Yocum’s report on the procedure when he met with the media Friday afternoon.
*Showalter said Zach Britton’s third extended spring training appearance could be moved up from May 21 to May 20, and could happen somewhere other than Sarasota. Britton threw 45 pitches on Thursday and is next scheduled to pitch on May 15. Showalter added it was unlikely that either Britton or Brian Roberts would be moved to the 60-day disabled list, as the team hopes to keep their options open in case either player takes a positive turn.
