Game 1: Orioles vs. Rangers lineups & pregame notes

*As expected the Orioles will place outfielder Endy Chavez on the disabled list to clear a roster spot for Tommy Hunter, who is scheduled to pitch tonight’s Game 2 of the doubleheader. Chavez has been dealing with a left intercostal injury –which is basically his side/ribcage area up to his arms — and he said on Thursday the injury has worsened since he first felt something in Anaheim. An MRI done on Chavez last week ruled out an oblique injury, and he’s basically dealing with an intercostal strain.

The Orioles are already without outfielder Nolan Reimold and Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty was in left field for Game 1. The O’s also selected the contract of Steve Tolleson from Triple-A Norfolk and he’s expected to be a utility infielder/outfielder, capable of playing left field as well.

*Jason Hammel has been progressively well with treatment on his right knee, and manager Buck Showalter said he has Hammel tentatively penciled in to start Monday or Tuesday’s game.  Brian Matusz (Saturday) and Jake Arrieta (Sunday) will start this weekend along with lefty Dana Eveland who is on his way to Baltimore and will be activated to make Friday’s start.

*Lefty Zach Britton threw his first extended spring game on Thursday, throwing 45 pitches –mostly fastballs, with a few changeups mixed in — and he went three innings, allowing one hit. Britton, who recorded five ground ball outs, also picked up a strikeout and he will throw again in a game on Tuesday. The reports on Britton were favorable, and his arm strength appears to be there, with Showalter pointing out that the 24-year-old Britton had good velocity in the outing. At this point, the end of May would be the best-case scenario for Britton, with early June the most likely timeframe for his return.

Was there any reason given for why the team chose to do a twi-night double header versus a day-night double header which would have allowed them to expand the active roster to 26 per the new CBA (

Sure seems that extra spot would have been useful given the lack of days off and how much work the pen has gotten since the weekend. Or is this just another front office faux pas where it seems our baseball people aren’t fully up to date on all the rules?

They wouldnt have had an extra man because it’s the next day. If this game had been rained out earlier in the weekend and was a makeup day-nighter that rule would apply.
