Orioles @ Rangers, Phillips here

*Reliever Zach Phillips is here, getting the call up from Triple-A Norfolk after last night’s game and the lefty will be activated if tonight’s game is played. Right-hander Jason Berken, who gave up seven runs (two earned) in the ninth inning last night was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster.

Phillips last pitched Sunday and has allowed six earned runs over 13 innings –spread over nine appearances — at Norfolk.  Three of his last four outings have been scoreless and he will give the Orioles’ a second lefty in the ‘pen along with Troy Patton. Phillips was the final roster cut this spring, mostly because he had an option remaining. Berken will continue to be used as a starter at Triple-A with the Tides rotation (including today) going in this order the next few days: Joel Pineiro, Steve Johnson, Brad Bergesen, Tommy Hunter, Chris Tillman and Jason Berken.

*With yesterday’s decision to option starter Tommy Hunter to Triple-A, the Orioles need a starter for Friday and Dana Eveland’s short start last night –he was pulled after just 63 pitches — may have tipped the Orioles hand. Adding Eveland, who is not on the 40-man roster after clearing waivers this spring, would require the Orioles opening up another spot with one option transferring catcher Taylor Teagarden or Brian Roberts from the 15 to the 60-day disabled list. That can be backdated to the end of spring so it wouldn’t change Roberts’ timetable, while Teagarden isn’t doing any baseball activities and is also a ways away.

Eveland is 3-2 with a 2.21 ERA and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of six starts.

*This afternoon’s rain has stopped and but there does appear to be a weather window.  No word yet on the game status, but I will pass along anything I get here and on Twitter.

Looking good on TV the other night. Now only if the O’s can look as good they will win for sure.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
