Os/Yankees Labor Day edition

*Jo-Jo Reyes is back with the team after going back to California for the birth of his second child, a son named Hudson. Manager Buck Showalter said he’s not sure where Reyes will slide back into the rotation, citing a number of factors including the possibility Rick VandenHurk gets a start and Jeremy Guthrie’s shoulder, which has been plagued with some nagging soreness. So far, Guthrie –who pitched yesterday’s finale in Tampa — is responding well.

*With Triple-A Norfolk’s season coming to a close the Orioles will recall another  pitcher — lefty Mark Hendrickson and righty Chris Tillman are the two most likely candidates — and Chris Davis and Jason Berken are also close to rejoining the team.  Davis will play in his second rehab game for Double-A Bowie this afternoon, playing third base, and he could rejoin the team in New York after that.

Berken threw a side session at Tropicana Field yesterday and will throw again on Tuesday before Thursday’s simulated game. If Bowie doesn’t make the playoffs (right now they are a 1/2 game out) Showalter hinted they could promote another player from there as well.

*Mark Reynolds is back at first base after committing two errors at third yesterday. This is just me, but I don’t think you’re going to see much of Reynolds back over at third. He’s clearly more comfortable at first base and the Orioles simply can’t have an infielder with 26 errors.  Assuming Davis’ shoulder holds up, the preference is for him to play third.

*It’s supposed to rain later this afternoon for the next few days, and it remains to be seen how any potential makeup games would shake out.

Hi Britt,

Rotoworld.com just reported that the O’s purchased Clay Rapada’s contract. Who did they bump from the 40-man to make room for him? I have that Mark Hendrickson was DFA’ed and then optioned (not outrighted) to Norfolk, so the roster was full, last time I looked. Thanks.

Hi there, the Os will have to clear two 40-man spots actually since Rapada and Accardo are both coming up. The best guess I have is Cesar Izturis going to the 60-day DL, although the Orioles have been hesitant to do that. Mark Hendrickson and Pedro Viola jump out as two pitchers they can take off as well…
