Hardy day-to-day with left ankle soreness

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy exited Thursday’s 9-4 loss against the Royals with left ankle soreness prior to the bottom of the seventh inning and is considered day-to-day.

“I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Hardy said of the injury, which first started bothering him up after batting practice on Wednesday. “It felt OK coming into today, and then it kind of crept back up on me.”

Right now, Hardy is scheduled to see team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens on Friday in Baltimore and he may get an MRI on the area as well.

“The good news, it doesn’t seem to be like an ankle turn, [because] it’s not swelling,”manager Buck Showalter said of Hardy’s injury, which the infielder described as low ankle discomfort that wraps around his foot.

“We will see where we are tomorrow. [Infielder Cesar Izturis] might be coming back at just the right time.”

While Izturis is slated to be activated off the disabled list Friday, any serious injury to Hardy would be a significant blow to the Orioles.   Hardy was just two innings removed from hitting a solo homer off Kansas City starter Jeff Francis, a 371-foot blast that marked the 100th home run of Hardy’s career and he has 19 homers and 48 RBIs in 81 games.

One of the most consistent members of the Orioles’ lineup, Hardy missed a month earlier this season with a strained left oblique. He signed a three-year contract extension with Baltimore on July 18.

Hope it’s not serious. He’s been one of the better Oriole stories this year.
