Orioles/Royals lineups & pregame tidbits

*In case you missed it the Orioles made a few roster moves today, claiming left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, releasing Justin Duchscherer (who has never appeared in a game for the O’s) and activating right-hander Brad Bergesen from the paternity list. There’s more info on all that on Orioles.com.

*As expected, new pitcher Tommy Hunter is here and he borrowed some cleats from reliever Jim Johnson. Apparently, even baseball players are fashion conscious. (I’m kidding, although the Rangers’ blue cleats would have been an eyesore today.) Hunter last pitched 2 1/3 innings Friday and is listed as being available in relief, along with Bergesen.

To clarify, Hunter was traded for because he’s a starter. He will start for the Orioles at some point.  Hopefully we will get a better idea of the plan for him, and Reyes, as things shake out the next few days.

*Cesar Izturis was sent back to Double-A Bowie today and he will play the next three games there before likely being activated for Friday’s series opener vs. Toronto. Izturis was with the team in New York this weekend, but given the state of the roster right now –which more like a revolving door — the Orioles didn’t want to use a spot in activating Izturis. He didn’t look 100 percent ready as well.

*Brad Bergesen is here and quite dazed from a whirlwind last 24 hours. His first child, a boy named Parker Steven, was born yesterday (August 1) at 12:57 p.m and Bergesen had an ear-to-ear grin in talking about the experience.

“The baby came out and I wept like a little boy,” said Bergesen, who was tearing up just talking about it. “I was very emotional. Our doctor,  Dr. [Claire M.] Weitz, she had everything lined up on the umbilical cord, she had everything lined up. She gave me a pair of scissors without even asking me.  And I got to cut [it]. It was just unbelievable.”

*This series rotation is Alfredo Simon, Jeremy Guthrie and Zach Britton. Beyond that I’m not sure, as the Orioles continue to sift through their rotation and entire roster in general.

*Finally, by request, I asked Felix Pie about his weird antics when the team has a walk-off celebration. Pie scurries to grab the helmet, in what he describes as a nod to the National Football League. “It’s a touchdown,” Pie said of grabbing the helmet in celebratory glee. “It’s like we scored a touchdown.” So, do with that what you will.
