Scott to DL

The Orioles are expected to play outfielder Luke Scott on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday’s game, making room for right-handed pitcher Mitch Atkins, who will make his first career Major League start in Texas.

Scott has been hampered by a torn right labrum since Spring Training and while the injury requires surgery, it’s unknown whether Scott will elect that route or wait until the season is over.

The Orioles had been discussing the possibility of Scott getting some rest –taking advantage of the upcoming All-Star break – and coming back in the second half more productive. The DL will be retroactive to Sunday’s game in Atlanta.

Voted the most valuable Oriole last season, Scott is coming off a series against the Braves in which he went 0-for-9, and his batting average and power numbers have steadily declined.  In 63 games, Scott is batting .223 with 11 doubles, nine homers and 22 RBIs. The Orioles will likely use a platoon of Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold in his absence.
