Orioles/Rangers lineups

*Happy Fourth of July! It’s also the birthdays of the late George Steinbrenner and Orioles principal owner Peter Angelos.

*A reminder to vote for Adam Jones (there is no limit on votes per person) for the All-Star Final Vote contest. Details are here.

*Manager Buck Showalter, who is making his return to Texas and still owns a home in the Dallas area, had an interview with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail at this time last year.  We all know how that turned out and now Showalter will be managing against his former club which includes a handful of players he had. Asked about his return to Texas, Showalter said he wouldn’t mind the Orioles flashing back to last year’s series, when they swept the Rangers in a four-game set.

*Mitch Atkins is here in Arlington and is one of two candidates to make Tuesday’s start. Alfredo Simon could also  be used and all of that depends on how tonight’s game unfolds.

*The Boston rotation will be Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton starting the first two games and it’s up in the air after that. The O’s could go Jeremy Guthrie on short rest for Saturday and Showalter said they are mulling over doing something different –perhaps using a host of relievers — for Sunday’s game.  The Red Sox will counter with Andrew Miller, Josh Beckett, John Lackey and Jon Lester.

Britton, who will be closely monitored in innings, will pitch the fifth game after the break. Speaking of Britton, he did get the ball from his first home run in Atlanta yesterday, which was a neat moment to watch. The Orioles all gave him the cold shoulder in the dugout when he came in until Derrek Lee finally couldn’t hold it in and started to smile. They erupted in congratulations after that.

*Vladimir Guerrero is among the handful of Orioles with Texas ties, having played with the ALCS Champion Rangers last year. Guerrero is struggling offensively right now, but Showalter said he doesn’t want to move him ut of the cleanup spot right now, referencing that Guerrero could have a big series against his former team and that he’s had a rest of sorts with InterLeague play. Showalter did leave the possibility open in the future, perhaps sometime after the Break, if things continue.
