Orioles/Pirates lineups and pregame tidbits
*Don Werner will take over as interim bullpen coach starting on Friday and manager Buck Showalter said the team will reevaluate things after Aug. 1.
Werner has been in the Orioles organization for nine years, and spent the last five as a roving catching instructor. His selection was based on a lot of things, including that he’s a good baseball guys who has been in the organization, throws good batting practice and wouldn’t disrupt the Minor League operations too much by leaving.
*The plan for top pitching prospect Dan Klein right not doesn’t involve surgery, and the right-hander will be given a rehab progression. Klein, who has a small S.L.A.P. tear in his right shoulder, was examined by renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum Monday and will see team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens on Friday in Baltimore. He is expected to head to the team’s spring facility in Sarasota shortly after that to start a rehab plan
*John Russell will be the bench coach again tonight with Willie Randolph expected to serve as third base coach. Asked if this arrangement could continue after the Pirates set, Showalter didn’t rule it out. Right now, the team will evaluate that on a series-by-series basis.
*Alfredo Simon (strained right hamstring) is expected to start throwing down in extended spring and is targeting the minimum DL stay, which would be June 28th.
*No new news on the rotation although it sounds as if the Orioles will try to avoid going back-to-back lefties with Zach Britton and Brian Matusz. That makes it more likely Chris Jakubauskas starts Friday, pushing Matusz back to Saturday. The team is also considering giving Jake Arrieta a few extra days’ rest, since he didn’t look good physically last night and his right hip –which acted up a little bit in Chicago — was a factor again last night.
*Brian Roberts will be out at least another 2-3 weeks and is allowed to do some light conditioning only. More info on that is here.
*Cesar Izturis is progressing very well and could be back after the All-Star break. That’s great news since the initial prognosis involved him potentially missing the entire season.
