Russell as bench coach?
O’s coach John Russell made his return to Pittsburgh today, but he was noticeably absent from his usual third base spot. Here’s what manager Buck Showalter had to say about the reasoning for keeping Russell as the bench coach and sending out Willie Randolph instead.
“[It was a] combination of things. [His] knee’s been barking a little bit, plus I want to get him closer to the catchers between innings and stuff.
You know, we talked about it a little bit. Plus, with John coming back here to Pittsburgh I wanted him to be a little closer to me to talk about his knowledge of the Pirates a little bit. It was three-fold.”
Also, The Orioles agreed to terms with third-round pick Mike Wright, a right-handed pitcher out of East Carolina, on Monday.
Wright went 6-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts for this season and was the organization’s second-highest drafted pitcher behind top pick, and third overall selection, Dylan Bundy.
Wright is the third Orioles top-10 pick in this month’s draft to agree to terms, joining left-handed pitchers Matt Taylor, (5) from Middle Georgia College and Central Michigan’s Trent Howard (7.)
