Markakis at 1B & other tidbits

*Nick Markakis is making today’s start at first base, the first of his professional career. He will be using Buck Showalter’s glove and is out taking infield work as I type this. Markakis has been lobbying Showalter to play first base for weeks, and now he’s gotten his wish.

*Jake Fox was designated for assignment to make room for starter Brian Matusz on the 25-man roster. It’s about 50-50 right now that the Orioles make a trade that sends Fox to another club. If he does clear waivers he would be outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.

*First baseman Derrek Lee (left oblique strain) is flying back to Baltimore today and will start his rehab assignment for Double-A Bowie on Thursday. From the sound of things, Lee is on the fast track right now and it wouldn’t shock me if he’s activated by the end of the week, although early next week is the more likely scenario.
