Odds and ends, lineups

*Justin Turner –who was taken off the Orioles 40-man last year and claimed by the Mets on waivers — was called up to New York April 19 and is coming off a great series against Houston. Turner, a middle infielder, had five RBIs yesterday. Good to see him getting a chance somewhere.

The Mets also selected pitcher Pedro Beato from the O’s in the Rule-5 Draft this winter and Beato was a reliable member of their bullpen before hitting the disabled list with right elbow tendinitis.

*Orioles starter Brian Matusz will make his first rehab start (weather permitting) for Class A Frederick and my associate reporter, Avi Zaleon will be there reporting live. Give him a follow on twitter @avi_zaleon, he will be helping out with Orioles coverage all summer.

The plan is for Matusz to throw 55-60 pitches, and he will go as long as that takes. He would go 75-80 in his next start on the 21st–at either Double-A or Triple-A — and could be activated as early as the 26th. A lot of that will depend on how Matusz feels, and where the team is at with the bullpen. In a perfect world, the Orioles would like Matusz to get three rehab starts and be built up to 100 pitches. But it doesn’t always work out that way and the need for him may come sooner, rather than later.
