Manny Machado SAL Player of the Week
Orioles top prospect Manny Machado has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the week for the week of April 25 through May 1. Machado hit .480 during the week with five home runs and 12 RBIs.
The third overall pick in the last year’s Draft, Machado went 12-of-25 (.480) at the plate during the week with five home runs, 12 RBIs, seven runs scored and seven walks. He recorded multiple hits in five of the seven games.
The 18-year old shortstop is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak. He has reached base in 11 consecutive games dating back to April 18. After going homerless in his first 59 at-bats this season, Machado has connected on five home runs in his last 25 at-bats.
Machado is the first Shorebirds player to receive a weekly award from the South Atlantic League this season. He leads the club in runs scored (19), doubles (6), home runs (5), RBIs (20), walks (17), on-base percentage (.451) and slugging percentage (.639).
He ranks fifth in the South Atlantic League in slugging percentage, second in the league in walks and fourth in the circuit in RBIs.
Machado will be promoted at some point this season, as the Orioles plans are for him to advance at least one level in his first full professional season. However, the organization has stressed patience in moving Machado along given his youth and how early in the season it is. It’s also a bigger jump from low-A to high-A than many people realize, and keep in mind Machado was a late signing last year and missed nearly the entire Minor League season.
