Britton’s debut

*Orioles top pitching prospect, lefty Zach Britton, will make his Major League debut this afternoon against the Rays.

“I’ll promise you this, after today’s game over, I will say the same about Zach Britton as I did before the game starts,” manager Buck Showalter said. “You take a lot of things in consideration about what’s going on today. You have a team pretty hungry over there to win a game. He’s got his work cut out for him. That’s why they call it the big leagues. There’s somewhat of development going on, but it’s about giving the Orioles a chance to win a baseball game.”

*Britton will be helped by a Rays lineup wit ha lot of lefties. Rays Johnny Damon was a late scratch with a sore calf and Evan Longoria is also out with an oblique injury.

*Orioles left fielder Luke Scott could be used to pinch-hit if needed but the Orioles will try to stay away from him for the next few days. Scott said he was targeting Wednesday as his return, although it’s a moving target. At this point, the team doesn’t expect a disabled list scenario.

*Justin Duchscherer will have an ablation on his lower back, around the SI joint, which will shut him down 4-5 days. The procedure is a pain management one that involves using radio frequency waves to heat up the nerves, which in gets the pain out of that particular area. It is a procedure Duchscherer has had before and one that has worked well for him in the past. It provides temporary relief that varies on a case-by-case basis.
