Britton to start Sunday, Matusz to DL

Brian Matusz is going to the disabled list with an intercostal strain that could sideline him anywhere from 3-6 weeks, according to president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail.

In his place, the Orioles will call up top pitching prospect Zach Britton, who will start Sunday. Sunday’s scheduled starter, Chris Tillman, will move up to take Matusz’s place on Saturday.

Matusz arrived on Friday afternoon with acute back pain and an MRI on Friday evening showed further injury. Given the severity of his injury, MacPhail said the Orioles chose to recall Britton, who was sent to Triple-A to try to save service time.

The 23-year-old Britton pitched to a staff-best 1.35 ERA this spring and will make his Major League debut against the Tampa Bay Rays in Sunday’s series finale.
