Bergesen to the 'Pen

At first, several reporters thought it was a joke since the players frequently like to alter the lineups to mess with the media. But Brad Bergesen’s name as available in relief was no joke. Interim manager Juan Samuel and Bergesen confirmed the move, which could be for the long term, although nothing is known for certain.

What we do know is Bergesen has struggled in his sophomore season and the Orioles off day on Monday affords them the luxury of skipping Bergesen and keep the rest of their starters on regular rest. But what happens next? Does Jake Arrieta come up? Does Bergesen go back in the rotation?

“It’s the unknown right now,” Bergesen said.

The hope is Bergesen will use relief to straight out his arm slot, which is believed to be the mechanical problem behind his most recent struggles. He was sent to Triple-A following an 0-2 start to the season, but he said following his last start that he’s not dealing with the same confidence issues that plagued him last start.

“I think it’s kind of a combination of they need someone in the pen just with the load the bullpen guys have been taking on these last three days, and then obviously my last start was a struggle,” Bergesen said. “So, they see it as an opportunity for me to just try to get a couple innings at a time.”

Bergesen matched a season high by allowing six earned runs in a career-low 2 1/3 innings in the Orioles 9-1 loss to the Yankees at the new Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

He has given up four earned runs or more in three of his past four outings, and Wednesday’s 69-pitch effort was the second time in three starts in which he was charged with a half-dozen runs. Bergesen has allowed 41 baserunners in his past 21 innings and yielded 19 earned runs over that stretch.

“It’s been very frustrating at times,” Bergesen said. “When I did come back up [from Triple-A] after those three starts, I felt like I’ve been pitching somewhat consistent minus the last start. But right now, it’s where I’m needed and so hopefully I’ll be able to do the job out there and give some relief to those guys.
