Nolan Reimold gets a hit

I told him that would be the title of my blog post when it happened.

Nolan Reimold snapped an 0-for-22 skid with a two-out single in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game, connecting for a left field single off Phillies lefty Jamie Moyer.

Reimold who was going over film with hitting coach Terry Crowley before 8 a.m. this morning, was pulling out all the stops –and taking a good amount of ribbing from his teammates — to snap his skid. Some of the Orioles were taking bets on the date Reimold would get a hit, and he was joking around about finding a locker that wasn’t hitless in the away clubhouse at Bright House Field.

After striking out in his first at-bat in the first inning, Reimold sent a ball to the warning track in left field to score the Orioles’ first run. Slowed by left Achilles tendon surgery from last September, Reimold didn’t even reach base this spring until walking on Saturday. He went on to score in that game, but was hitless in eight games entering Sunday.

He told me this morning that his hitless streak wasn’t by chance. He wasn’t getting good swings and wasn’t having good at-bats. Good to see a guy not sugarcoat it or try to make excuses when he’s struggling.

I was driving back from Spring Training when I heard the hit on the radio. I thought it would be coming when in his previous at bat he hit the ball to the warning track. He had looked lost in the games in which I had seen him play while in FL. I expect that with maybe one more bad day, he should be on his way now.

I think Nolan is going to be a cornerstone of the resurgence of the orioles over the next few years.

I noticed in your Bio that you are a Michigan State grad. Are you getting any grief over the Maryland game?

So much grief. Reimold’s first words to me during our interview was a Michigan State dig. (He’s pulling for N. Iowa.)
