Yanks-Os postgame: Aubrey, Meredith & BP battles

Designated hitter Michael
apparently felt something in his groin while coming out of the batter’s
box during his at-bat in the second inning. He was lifted from the game, but
manager Dave Trembley didn’t really have an update following the Orioles 5-3
loss to the Yankees. Michel Hernandez replaced Aubrey as DH.

Cla Meredith continues
to make a strong bid for what is believed to be one of three bullpen spots up
for grabs.  A submarine-style pitcher,
Meredith came on in the sixth inning to replace Jason Berken. He got No. 9 batter Ramiro Pena to fly out, struck
out Brett Gardner and got red-hot Nick Johnson to ground out to shortstop.

Meredith hasn’t allowed a hit in four scoreless appearances,
tossing a total of 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

“Meredith continues to be good for us,” Trembley said. “That
was a nice test for us with the [three] left-handed hitters.”

Trembley also gave kudos to Matt Albers, one of the guys in
direction competition with Meredith for a bullpen spot. Albers tossed a
scoreless seventh and has thrown 5 1/3 innings this spring without allowing a

The locks for spots in the ‘pen are closer Mike Gonzalez,
setup man Jim Johnson, Koji Uehara and Mark Hendrickson, with the final three
spots mostly up for grabs. Kam Mickolio appears to be the front-runner for one of
those, with Will Ohman and Alberto Castillo the leading candidates for a
situational lefty role. Meredith, Albers, Berken, Dennis Sarfate, Alfredo Simon
and David Hernandez are also believed to be in the mix for a spot.
