SARASOTA, Fla. — Friday’s Orioles-Marlins game at Ed Smith Stadium has been cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled. Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie will throw Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. ET game in Tampa against the Yankees instead.
With Friday’s washout setting back both teams pitching staffs managers Dave Trembley and Fredi Gonzalez have agreed to play a seven-inning “B” squad game on Saturday afternoon at 10 a.m. ET at Ed Smith Stadium. Reliever Mark Hendrickson will start that game for Baltimore with Mike Gonzalez, Dennis Sarfate, Kam Mickolio and Chris George also scheduled to throw. Jason Berken will throw in Tampa, with the rest of the scheduled Orioles arms expected to be announced later on Friday.
Trembley said on Friday afternoon that outfielder Nolan Reimold will also stay in Sarasota and serve as the designated hitter for Saturday’s “B” game. Reimold went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as the DH in Wednesday’s loss, but according to Trembley, is progressively running better. Reimold has been wearing orthotics in his shoes to help alleviate some of the expected soreness from the season-ending surgery he had on his left Achilles tendon in September.
The Orioles will also play a “B” squad game on Sunday against the Pirates in Bradenton. Jake Arrieta, Troy Patton, Brandon Erbe, Chorye Spoone and Luis Lebron are scheduled to pitch in that game, which will start at 10 a.m. ET at Pirate city, the club’s Minor League complex.
“The first four guys will go two each, Lebron will go one. It gives us an opportunity to get some more innings for those guys to pitch,” Trembley said on Thursday. “It’s really hard. You’ve got 30 pitchers in camp and you get to a point… we wanted to schedule a B game so we could get some of those young guys opportunities to pitch. You start running out of innings.”
Trembley said the Orioles will bring over some position players from Minor League camp to help fill out the two rosters, and was expecting to talk to director of player development David Stockstill later on Friday. The Orioles Double-A and Triple-A teams open Spring Training games on March 17, but will move to the Ed Smith Stadium complex on Saturday to workout.
Fans holding paid tickets for Friday’s game may exchange their tickets for any of the remaining Spring Training games at Ed Smith Stadium, subject to availability, or obtain a refund.
On non-game days, tickets may be exchanged at the stadium box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the day of a game, beginning two hours prior to game time, tickets may be exchanged for that game only at the ticket windows. Fans who would like to exchange their tickets for a prime game will be required to pay the difference in cost.
